General Election 2014 is nearing. Holidays with NO “In
Lieu of” are announced in offices……it’s may be a long weekend for many of us
(Including Me)
I too could not resist the temptation of enjoying the
long weekend with my family and friends.
BUT
Then I checked by my conscience “Am I doing the right
thing?” and same goes to we all.
Should we really keep ourselves absent from General
Election…”The Biggest Talent Show”(As on TV commercial rightly terms it).?
Well this question can have several answers with their
own set of rationalizations.
As a part of our Constitutional Mandate, we have Right
to vote.
Which means, no individual, authority, group of people
or any institution can stop us to vote.
But it is also our FUNDAMENTAL DUTY to cast our vote.
As this comes under Directive principles so it cannot be enforced by court of
Law. And therefore technically, one can absent from voting at purely one’s wish
with no legal obligation.
But this is not what ought to be exercised. Our Vote is
our formal share to the political power.
If we don’t vote, we don’t have share in the power and
therefore we are nobody to criticize the system, benefited from the system and
Claim to the system
Let me enlighten the importance and validity of voting
The History of Electoral Vote to power is as old as it
started in 6th century B.C.E. and
here till present day.
The Electoral Voting was not very inclusive and
transparent.
The story of modern democracy began
at least two centuries ago. The popular uprising of French Revolution of 1789 did
not establish a secure and stable democracy in France. Throughout the
nineteenth century, democracy in France was overthrown and restored several
times. Yet the French Revolution inspired many struggles for democracy all over
Europe.
In Britain, the progress towards democracy
started much before the French Revolution. But the progress was very slow.
Through the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries, series of political events
reduced the power of monarchy and feudal lords. The right to vote was granted
to more and more people. Around the same time as the French Revolution, the
British colonies in North America declared themselves independent in 1776. In
the next few years these colonies came together to form the United States of
America.
Though in many countries democratic politics
was started very early However, universal adult franchise -the principle of one
person on vote was not fully realized
The Right to Vote was not extended to all people in
many countries. It was limited to only few influential people or some sect.
Even after much of reform it was not allowed for women
to cast their vote in many counties in Europe.
After much of gradual reform, it was extended to all.
A quick glance as when universal adult franchise granted
to the country depicted in the table

In India, we have been blessed that post-independence
democratic system was adopted and we all were given equal opportunity to vote
with equal value.
Voting is our FUNDAMENTAL
DUTY. Voting is the foundation stone of democracy. It’s very important to see what
kind of election is being held. What kind of people can elect a government?
Today Democracy is the most prominent form of the government.
So a thoughtful voting will lead to a situation where a
right party will be voted to power.
A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the
character of the user.
Which will further
fulfill the wishes of the people by making different government policies which
in favor of citizen of India and for our country as a whole.
We must not only vote but also create awareness among
the people of our surroundings to vote.
We must go and meet with some poor and illiterate
people around us and school them about importance of their vote. So that DRINK
& VOTE should not happen.
We must convince to exercise the power based on their own consciences and rational thought as to whom they should vote to power.
Stop “vote early and vote often” practices.
Let’s not get influenced by any party just on their
face value.
We must Pledge to vote.
We should take an
oath that:
we exercise our precious
right mandated by the Constitution of India, of casting our vote, under every
possible circumstance and whenever we get the opportunity. Election of our
representative by voting is not only our right but also our duty towards the
country.
We will make all possible efforts to use
our vote to elect a public representative who would meet nation's expectations
and,
we also take oath that we would also encourage other people to vote with
awareness.
We will make all possible efforts to use our vote to elect a public representative who would meet nation's expectations and,
we also take oath that we would also encourage other people to vote with awareness.
